Biomolecules: proteins and DNA

HIV Protease

HIV protease is an AIDS virus enzyme critical for virus reproduction. The protein is shown in ribbon format, highlighting secondary structure. A peptide inhibitor is shown in spacefill format.

Hemoglobin subunit

Hemoglobin is the oxygen transport protein in red blood cells. Here, a backbone trace is shown, illustrating the way the peptide chain is folded. The tube width indicates local flexibility, broader meaning more flexible. The heme group that is responsible for the bright red color is shown in spacefill format.

Insulin

Insulin regulates the blood sugar level. It is a protein consisting of two small domains linked by sulfur bridges. The insulin structure is shown as a ribbon diagram, the sulfur bridging cysteine residues are shown in spacefill format.

Small molecules: pharmaceuticals, drugs, hormones etc.

Communication of scientific concepts

Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP)

Image showning the principle behind GFP fluorescence. The protein absorbs blue light and reemits it as green light. The protein is used a lot in life science research. Designed for the Annual Review of Microbiology.

Bionanotechnology

Computer generated image of an atomic force microscopy (AFM) tip modified with a carbon nanotube. The tip is probing the electronic properties of a single myoglobin protein molecule.

Solid-phase peptide synthesis

Picture schematically showing a growing peptide synthesised on a solid support bead. The structure was modelled from a 2D sketch of the chemical composition. Designed for Fluka chemicals.
